Expertise |
Publicly discussed issues surrounding the Covid 19 pandemic (e.g., aspects of vaccination or dealing with vulnerable groups) have highlighted the importance of ethical reflection at all levels of the health care system. In contrast to other fields of ethics (such as medical or media ethics), public health ethics can be considered a very young subject in Germany. Accordingly, there are no established curricula to date. In an international comparison, the scientific institutions are currently still in the process of development and profile building.
Public health ethicists are concerned with determining, evaluating and prioritizing possible courses of action in the field of public health. They are based on ethical principles and values, but also on the convictions of interest groups. Public health ethicists* work across disciplines to develop solutions to ethical and societal challenges. They understand the maintenance and improvement of conditions of a healthy and good life as a collective practice.
